Nearly every core banking vendor can now point to an AI agent of some kind. What separates them is what the agent can actually do once it is put to work. As banks move from assistants that retrieve information to agents that initiate workflows and take actions, the differentiator becomes less about the agent itself and more about the environment it has to operate across.
An agent confined to a single application is relatively straightforward. The difficulty appears the moment an agent is asked to do something that spans the institution. Investigating a transaction, resolving an exception, or executing a financial workflow can require customer and account data from the core, transaction state from the payment layer, compliance decisions, permissions, case history, and reporting data. When those capabilities sit behind different data models and point-to-point integrations, the agent inherits that fragmentation. Every additional action requires another connection, another translation, and another control boundary.
This is why the emerging architecture for agentic banking is horizontal rather than application-specific. An agent needs access to consistent financial data, governed workflows, and execution across the entire operating environment, not within a single system. The more authority an agent is given, the more important that common foundation becomes.

An agent operating on this foundation is not stitching systems together with every action; it works within a single, governed environment.
That distinction will define the next phase of agentic banking. AI agents can only operate as coherently as the infrastructure they are given authority to act across, and the institutions that build that foundation first will be the ones able to extend real authority to their agents safely.
